Deer Mice as Pets, and other Tall Tails

On 11.20.01 we adopted two female mice from our local pet store.

FANNY

This is Tanfanny, but we call her Fanny. She is white with tan at the base of her ears and on her fanny, and her eyes are pink. She came to us on the 20th and - SURPRISE - had 9 babies on the 24th. I thought she was a little 'chubby'. Fanny has a sweet disposition. She's a wonderful mother and a hard worker. She keeps herself busy by piling all the wood chips on top of her little plastic house. She was given organic tissue for nest building, but doesn't shred it like the deer mice do. She crawls into her house and pulls the tissue over herself like a blanket.

Curly Sue

Here's a little movie of Curly Sue running in her wheel. (344k)

Curly is cute as a button. She has wavy jet black fur on top and wavy tan fur on bottom. Her tail is solid black. She's chunky and I'm starting to worry if she isn't also pregnant. Fanny and Curly were in separate tanks at the pet shop. The owner had them sorted by color instead of by sex. (oh brother!)

Curly and Fanny thumped their tails and scrapped a bit the first day. Now they're best buddies. I haven't tried sticking them in with the deer mice, and I'm not sure that's a good idea. The deer mice are very happy in their environment and I don't want to traumatize them. I'm curious to know if they all could get along. If you have an opinion either way, let me know.

12.03.01

Curly had her babies. Pictured below are Fanny and the new little gummy bears. About two days before delivery it became obvious that Curly was, in fact, pregnant. Fanny began to coddle Curly and groom her a great deal more than before. My son and I were looking in the cage and he asked me, "Don't they fight?" I answered an emphatical, "No! They LOVE each other!" About that time Fanny did something she had never done before. She put her arms around Curly and began humping. LMAO!!! What comedic timing she has.

Fanny, after losing all her pups, has been helping Curly nurse the pups. They're both good mommies, but Fanny is definitely the best nest builder of the two.

Amazing how quickly they change. There are six in all.
One is a runt, still pink, but probably will turn black.

The runt turned black three days ago. The pups are now eight days old. They have soft peach fuzz fur and little whiskers. You can see them learning to use their tiny tails. Their ears are becoming more prominant and detached. At least one pup has curly whiskers. Perhaps it is a sign the pup will have wavy fur like Mom. Only time will tell.

BELOW: Of the two pups facing forward, the one on the right seems to have curly whiskers.

This is one of the curly/wirey haired pups. His little ear looks like a rice crispy right now, but it stretches out a little more each day. Haven't sexed the babies yet, but I've been told by members of MissMousie Message Board to handle the pups every chance I get so they'll be used to me.

This is a new pic of one of the curly/wirey haired pups. Two of the pups are curly like this. They don't like to be picked up, but they calm down quickly once they're being held.

LOOK! Their eyes opened today.
