Message: My boyfriend has a snake and he feeds it baby mice. I can not watch him do it, cause i hate to see that kind of thing, the babies are so small and cute.
Well... today when it was time for the snake to get fed, and one of the babies climbed up the branch in the snakes cage and jumped out of the cage! So my boyfriends brother thought he was special and decided to keep it!
I went out and got the baby some food, a wheel and a tube with some fluff to sleep with. But when i came to my boyfriends house, i noticed the baby looked really small.
I have been reading information about mice on the net since i found out they were gonna keep the little guy.
Im just concerned about the baby. will he be okay? did he leave his mother too early? what can i do to make sure he stays healty?
If anyone can give me any information, please email me or just reply to this post
Thanks!

Message: If the baby was old enough to climb out of the tank, he's probably old enough to be seperated from his mom (maybe). He may still be nursing. Mice can be weaned at about 3 weeks of age, but they often also continue nursing until 4 weeks. If he won't eat solid food you can feed him formula. At the age he probably is you could mix dry oatmeal with either rice or soy milk and let him eat it on his own. He probably doesn't need to be fed with an eyedropper.
Mice do better with a companion, but males are difficult to keep together. If it's a female you should get another female to keep with her.
You should suggest that your boy friend feed pre-killed (frozen) food. This is recommended by many vets, zoo curators and snake owners. You can read more about this in Melissa Kaplan's articles Feeding Prekilled vs. Live Prey and Reptile veterinarians and zoo reptile curators on feeding live rodent prey. Melissa Kaplan has a very good reptile site Herp and Green Iguana Information Collection as well as authoring a couple of Iguana books.
I don't normally help snake owners, but this is better for the mice as well as the snake. Thanks for your concern.

Message: Thanks alot!
I put some oatmeal into soymilk and the little guy loves it :)
And my boyfriend took a look at the sites about the snakes and how you should feed them pre killed mice. I think he is going to do that from now on.
So hopefully, the baby mouse does okay...
Thanks again

Message: Good luck with the baby. If he (or she) makes it, it may need a companion. Especially if it's a female. Males don't often get along well with other males. If that's the case you should give him a lot of human attention. Females usually do much better with a female companion.

Message: I'm sorry to hear about the baby. It's difficult to hand raise very young babies. Only about 50% of them survive. It's much better if they have their mom around.
