Hello again Paul----

I wrote to you awhile ago about the young
deermouse I raised and wanted to release---

You told me about their grim chances out
in the wild. And, as long as the weather
was holding out, I figured I'd keep it for
awhile and think of possibly keeping it.

Well, I think this mouse is trying to tell
me that it really wants to be free (or at the very least, needs another mouse companion).

He/She (?) has released itself twice, in my
house! Luckily, it had made it's presence
known and came out to me. I'm worried because
I know there was poison put under some of the
base cabinets in 1995. (not sure if it'd still
work, but I certainly don't want to take a chance).

Didn't you mention that you might know someone,
depending on where I live, who might be interested??

I'm about 20 miles outside of Chicago, in the western suburb of Riverside. Any wild-about- deermice people this way??

I thought that I'd re-home him to an enthusiast,
or try releasing him back by our garage--(no poison) It's about 150' away---and there's a 20x40' woodsy area right behind it. That way,
it could come and go as it pleased, (I would even set out food) The garage is so well insulated that the heat of one car parked
at night keeps it fairly warm all winter.

Your thoughts and referrals appreciated

Sue Kozoyed
(BTW, I sent a copy of this to you directly)

Sue,

I am in the same boat. I had 2 babies. I now have one. This past Monday night, they both found their way out of their habitat/cage, which I thought was secure. I caught one of them easily Tuesday morning. He was behind the stereo/entertainment center on the baseboard and crawled into my hand. The other has not been seen. They are now 5 weeks old. I have 3 cats so the other is either in someone's belly or hopefully made it outside. My cats don't seem to be "hunting" inside, at least not while we are around and awake. So I have the one alone. Do I keep him or let him go back to the wild? I've had him since he was little under 2 weeks old. His eyes were closed. The vet says he will be fine, to release him. (So does my husband!) I can keep him safe from the cats, but is that fair? And what if I make a mistake? He will dinner. He seems to be doing better alone. His fur is healthier looking, his nest is big and fluffy and he is eating and hoarding food very well. He comes out when I come into the room. He will let me pet him a little, but usually hides. I don't want to push the petting until I decide to release him or keep him. I don't know. One day I think it is best for a wild animal to be wild and want to release him. The next day, I know he would be snake/hawk/cat food if I do release him.

Hi Christy,

I'm sorry to hear you've lost one of your mice. He may still return. You could go either way with releasing him, but if he is tame I wouldn't release him. If he is semi-tame, he can revert to wild behavior. His chances are probably better in captivity, even with your cats, than in the wild. If he needs a companion, you could get him a domestic mouse. I've had luck doing that, but they don't always get along. Each mouse is different.
