Subject: Deer mouse and domestic together? IP: Logged
Message: I have a deer mouse, I found him/her (pete) a few weeks ago and his eyes were still closed. Formula fed, all happy now, about 2 weeks later. About 25 days old in my best guess now. I have a friend who wants to give me her domestic (Baby)about a year old.. We put them together yesterday in Petes cage and everything was great, they were cleaning each other, Pete was a little rough in my opinion, but she just layed there with her eyes closed and seemed to enjoy it. They were together for about 45 mins all great. Then we put him in her cage with her... Did not go well, 2 mins in a big fight and Pete played dead on his back until she stopped fighting with him and we took him out. Is it territorial? Do you think that she would be ok with him in his new house we just set up for him today? I need advice!!

Message: It's usually recommended that introductions take place in a clean cage. At 25 days old, he's still a baby. I'm surprised that the girl didn't try to mother him, but not all females do that. He may be a little too old to introduce as a baby and too young to introduce as an adult. I would put them together in a clean cage and keep an eye on them. If you suspect things may not go well, don't leave them alone.
good luck,
paul
