Message: I took a Deer mouse away from my sister in law's cat, who hissed
and spat at me, one eye was quite bloody. I put him in an ice cream
pail by the heater and fully expected him to be dead in the
morning. He was very much alive and eats like a little piglet! loves
cherry tomatoes, cooked yam, pomagranate seeds etc. That was
three days ago and I don't know if I should let him go since he only
has one good eye! Help!

Message: Hi Sandy,
I'm not sure what you mean "he only has one good eye". Do you mean that one eye is missing or just injured. If it's injured you may be able to tell if he can see in that side by moving your hand around.
Deer mice with only one eye do well in captivity, but in the wild it's difficult to say. There is such a high mortality rate in the wild anyway, of course missing an eye isn't going to help him.
I think if he's generally healthy otherwise, he should do OK. He may not have a long life, but few wild ones do.
I hope that is some help.

Message: Thank you Paul,
My son and I released him after five days into our nearby nature
park. I could wiggle my finger in front of his injured eye and got no
response. I guess I'll never know if he made it, but I know I saved
him from certain death so the rest is up to him!
